Doctor Who Series 9: Second Trailer

We're only 40 days or so until the new series of Doctor Who starts and the BBC have been good enough to release another trailer.

The Doctor's first line is 'sorry I'm late'. A surprising apology from a man who rarely felt the need to apologise for anything last series. From the picture above it appears that he's more comfortable around Clara. The production team have been talking about his personality softening and I have mixed feelings about this. I enjoyed the abrasiveness of the new Doctor and don't want him to be too cosy and friendly. Hopefully the show will strike a balance and not lose all of the old crustiness.

The trailer indicates that Maisie Williams will be appearing in the Viking episode as well as the highwayman episode. In this trailer she is accompanied by a leonine creature later seen to be breathing fire. It's not clear yet whether Maisie's character will be a friend or foe of the Doctor's, or both at different times.

The trailer is certainly packed with more monster shots, including the decent looking Dragon pictured above. We also get to see some armour plated machines in the viking era village and more shots of a black robed figure with a face that looks like it's divided into different slices.

The last trailer revealed the Daleks, and what looked like the city on Skaro. Here we get a closer look at the pepperpots. Along with the Bronze models, we see older models of Daleks, including
a Special Weapons Dalek. Although the 2012 episode Asylum of the Daleks promised 'every Dalek ever' it kept most of them hidden in darkness. This episode looks more like it will better fulfill promise of Asylum

Missy inevitably appears in the trailer and it seems she will be meeting the Daleks up. Roger Delgado's Master teamed up with the Daleks in Frontier in Space so will Missy do the same thing? Or perhaps she'll both sides off against each other.

The trailer concludes with the Doctor describing a situation as "same old same old, just the Doctor and Clara Oswald in the Tardis". The words "same old, same old" aren't the best ones to use to entice new viewers to the show. I suppose it's meant to fit with the idea that the Doctor and Clara are in their "glory" years. It's tempting fate like when Rose said she would stay with the Doctor "forever" in Army of Ghosts. This kind of of confidence is no doubt leading to the fall that the regulars talked about. Either Clara is leaving at the end of the year or something will happen that will alter the status quo of their relationship.

The trailer is lighter in tone than the previous one but gives us a greater glimpse of the foes the Doctor will face in the next series. I for one am pretty excited by what I see. Let's hope it's good.
